Rila Monastery from Sofia

Rila Monastery's own official site is direct about this: despite repeated attempts by the monastery's management to restore public bus service, no regular public bus currently reaches the monastery.

Current options are private transport, organized transport, transport arranged through a travel agency, or a bus to Blagoevgrad followed by a taxi. Operators run scheduled transfers from Sofia, so check current times rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

Practically, that means a tour or private transfer is effectively required for most first-time visitors, and the visit becomes a full-day commitment once travel time is factored in, not a quick half-day stop.

St John of Rila founded the monastery in the 10th century (876-946); most of what visitors see today dates from construction that began in 1335.

A fire destroyed much of the complex, and it was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862, including the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin (1834-37) and frescoes painted between 1840 and 1848. Hrelyo's Tower, built in the 14th century and standing 23 metres tall, survived the fire and is the oldest structure still standing.

UNESCO inscribed Rila Monastery as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
