Central Sofia
The Largo and the Former Party House
The Largo, the complex of three buildings around Independence Square, includes the former headquarters of the Bulgarian Communist Party, known as the Party House. Completed in 1955 in the Socialist Classicism style, the building originally carried a red star on its spire, removed after 1989. Today it serves as the meeting place for Bulgaria's National Assembly, which moved there in September 2020.
It sits centrally at Independence Square, directly accessible from the Serdika metro stations, making it an easy addition to a central sightseeing walk rather than a separate trip.
Near NDK
A Real Piece of the Berlin Wall, Near NDK
A four-metre segment of the actual Berlin Wall stands in a memorial park near the National Palace of Culture (NDK), next to a memorial to victims of communism in Bulgaria. Berlin's mayor gave it to Sofia in 2006 after the city's municipal government requested it, and it carries bilingual Bulgarian and German plaques. It's easy to miss if you don't know it's there.
A demanding day trip
Buzludzha: A Real Day Trip, but a Long One
Buzludzha, the abandoned UFO-shaped former Communist Party assembly hall, sits roughly three to four hours' drive from Sofia each way. A full round trip covers around 510km with about six hours twenty minutes of driving alone, and a complete day tour typically runs close to eleven hours. That's roughly double the round-trip time of Sofia's other common day trips, so treat it as its own decision rather than a casual add-on.
The interior has been permanently sealed for safety, with every entrance blocked and entry strictly forbidden. The peak and exterior remain freely accessible at any time, so this is an exterior-only visit, not an interior tour.
